This was Richter's third book. It was the first book of his well-known and classic trilogy series about the West (Ohio, PA, VA). The other books included "The Fields" and "The Town" that were published later in 1946 and 1950 but the publisher used the same format and board design for all three. One page is partly soiled as a result of a piece of paper left between two pages.
