The HMS Hood was considered one of the most beautiful battleships ever designed up until that time. When the ship was "laid down" in 1916 she was designed to be the largest and fastest warship in the world. She was sunk by the Bismarck, however, in 1941 during his first engagement. There were only 3 survivors. The book itself really brings this across via the bookcover itself and the design of the dust jacket.
