The book is a compilation of family letters between T.E. Lawrence and his brothers (Will, Frank, and Arnold), mostly written to their parentsT.E. Lawrence's letters date from 1916 to 1934 and come from all the locations described in his writings. With an introduction by Winston Churchill.

All of the Lawrence brothers:

  1. Thomas Edward Lawrence (T.E. Lawrence) – the most famous, born 1888.
  2. William George Lawrence (“Will”) – born 1889.
  3. Frank Helier Lawrence – born 1893.
  4. Arnold Walter Lawrence – born 1900
  5. Robert Lawrence – died in infancy.

Two of T.E. Lawrence’s brothers were killed in World War I: Will Lawrence was killed in action in 1915. Frank Lawrence was also killed in action in 1915, just weeks after Will.

This double loss deeply affected the Lawrence family. Their deaths are a central emotional core in The Home Letters, as the correspondence captures the family’s experience of the war and personal tragedy.

Only T.E. Lawrence and Arnold Lawrence survived into adulthood after the war. Arnold became a noted scholar and archaeologist.
