The 2001 Nobel Prize and Booker award-winning author presents a novel that follows the life of Mr. Biswas, a man from the lower caste in India who is forced to leave his home and travel to England to find work. Mr. Biswas is a unique and complex character, and the novel is told in a unique and powerful way

The title of the book is taken from a picture by surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. It's a story of a young Indian from the Crown Colony of Trinidad, who arrives in post-imperial England. He observes the gradual but profound changes wrought on the English countryside by the march of progress.

The author published more than 30 books over a 50 year period before passing away in 2018.
