The work is a comic verse play by the renowned essayist, publisher, playwright, and literary and social critic. First produced at the Edinburgh Festival in the summer of 1953, 'The Confidential Clerk' is a comic play with a plot derived from Greek drama, produced by Henry Sherek and directed by E. Martin Browne.

Eliot's play opened with its first production at the Edinburgh Festival, August 25 - September 5, 1953.
