A first edition thus of Ludwig Bemelmans' satirical wartime memoir, published by The Modern Library in 1941 — decades before he became a household name with the Madeline series. Illustrated throughout with the author's own inimitable line drawings, this is Bemelmans at his wittiest, poking fun at his own misadventures in the U.S. Army.
