David Donald. Stated first edition. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1956. No dust jacket, in a mylar protective cover. Hardcover is in Very Good condition. There is a high school prize award on the flyleaf and a list of names on the back flyleaf page. Otherwise, no writing or markings found in the book, 200 pp.

The book, first published in 1956, is a collection of essays that challenges traditional perspectives on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.

"Donald, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, was a leading scholar of Lincoln and 19th-century America. In Lincoln Reconsidered, he critically examines Lincoln’s leadership, political strategies, and decision-making, moving away from the hagiographic portrayals common at the time. He argues that Lincoln was a pragmatic politician who adapted to circumstances rather than being guided solely by moral convictions."

This was Donald's first effort at interpreting Lincoln. An interesting comparison to his masterpiece four decades later.
