Bowles's dark story follows an American named Nelson Dyar as he arrives in the International Zone of Tangier, Morocco, to begin a new job and a new life. The tale explores the disintegration of the American through his exploration of the brothels, drugs and unsavoury characters of the city, in his encounters with a culture alien to him.
