DH Lawrence. First American edition, later printing (third manuscript version). New York: Grove Press, 1959. Unclipped dust jacket is in Very Good+ condition, with original price $6.00 on inside flap. Hardcover is in Very Good+ condition. Former owner signature on flyleaf, otherwise, no markings or additional writing found in this well preserved copy, 368 pp. Introduction written by Mark Schorer. Preface by Archibald MacLeish.

David Herbert (1885-1930) Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover was first published privately in Italy in 1928, followed by a private French edition in 1929. Due to its explicit content, the novel was banned in several countries, including the U.K. and the U.S., until legal battles in the 1950's and 1960's allowed its wider publication.

This edition is the first unexpurgated American edition published by Grove Press (Greenwich Village, NY), which was significant because it marked a turning point in the U.S. regarding censorship and free speech. Part of the 100 Greatest Books Ever Written collection.
