This is an autobiographical love story written by Joyce in Trieste, most likely around 1914, when he was 32. This is the same year in which he began "Ulysses, " wrote "Exiles" and completed "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It was not published until 1968, first in a limited edition; but there was much more interest in the work than anticipated, leading to a second, unlimited "trade" edition (OF WHICH IS, this copy), includes a two page B/W photo frontispiece of Joyce holding a guitar dressed in tie & buttoned vest taken by Ottocaro Weiss in Zurich, Switzerland 1915, soon after Joyce arrived there from Trieste.
