Biography of an American woman pioneer. The main character, Anne Hutchinson, immigrates to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634 and runs afoul of the Puritan rulers because of her outspoken views.

Her strongly expressed belief in the individual soon attracted the businessmen of the colony, who also chafed under the authoritarianism of the Puritan church and local government. Anne and her followers repeatedly came into conflict with the authorities - opposing war with the Pequot Indians, fighting against the concept of Eve-induced Original Sin, upholding the separation between the Church and the conduct of business. By 1637, Anne had a larger following than did Governor John Winthrop. Brought to trial for her dissenting views, she was convicted and banished from the Bay Colony and finally murdered by native Americans. Ugh!
