Eliot's essay on the organic development of culture, and the state of Europe's culture after the Second World War. He discusses the culture in communist Russia, and compares it with a future in which culture as he sees it, ceases to exist. Eliot also discusses religion as it relates to culture.

He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. The book was published first in the U.K. In 1948.
