John Updike is considered to be one of the greatest American writers in the second half of the twentieth century. This is evident by the fact that he was only one of three writers who have ever won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice. This is Updike's 11th book and 5th novel. The story is about ten promiscuous couples living in Massachusetts in 1963. Described by one character as "the post-pill paradise"; it was rather controversial upon publication. The author was born in PA but lived in Ipswich, MA., which was the setting in many of his novels. He was 35 when he wrote this novel.
