Set during the American Civil War, the story follows a young American boy sent to work on the border of the Cherokee Nation. The novel explores the social and political climate preceding and following the Cherokee Removal from their ancestral homeland.

This is the authors second book following his best-selling, Cold Mountain, which was a National Book Award winner.
