This was Welty's sixth book, and third novel. It is a light-hearted story about dealing with the residents of Clay, Mississippi who are seen through the eyes of Edna Earle Ponder as she cares for her eccentric uncle, Daniel Ponder wants to give away the family fortune.
This comic novella originally ran in THE NEW YORKER a few months prior to book publication. It was later adapted to the stage.
