Tennessee Williams. First edition thus. New York: A New Directions Book, 1954. Both unclipped dust jacket (in a Mylar wrapper) and hardcover are in Very Good+ condition. No writing or markings found in this well-preserved copy, 211 pp. The dust jacket is designed by legendary modernist designer Alvin Lustig.

This edition follows the scarce 1948 limited edition of only 1,500 copies and is widely regarded as one of the most visually striking Tennessee Williams publications of the 1950’s. Lustig’s minimalist jacket design has become iconic among collectors of mid-century typography and American literary design. 

This copy 1954 One Arm and Other Stories from New Directions is considered a first edition thus / first printing of the 1954 trade edition, not a second printing.

Lustig himself is highly collectible in his own right among modernist design collectors. His typography-heavy and photographic jacket designs for New Directions are considered landmarks of American book design from the 1940’s–50’s
