Nathaniel Hawthorne. First edition thus. Boston: The Berkeley Printers, 1931. Hardcover is in Very a good condition, in its original glassine wrapper. Limited edition of which this is number 355/540 copies published. Has the word “Grandma” on flyleaf, otherwise, no writing or markings found in this well-preserved copy, 39 pp. Colored art work by cover design by Walt Harris.

A traveling tobacco peddler, Dominicus Pike, hears that old Mr. Higginbotham of Kimballton has been murdered, and he happily spreads the news from town to town. Then people start insisting the man is alive. Hawthorne's story is a darkly funny tale of rumor, mistaken certainty and a very surprising ending, lighter in tone than much of his work.

Illustrated throughout by Walt Harris, including the pictorial boards and endpapers. Introduction by Harry Lyman Koopman. 39 pages, in cloth-backed pictorial boards.

A handsome piece of 1931 fine printing for Hawthorne collectors, short fiction fans and lovers of vintage book design.

This is the first separate book publication of the story, but it first appeared in magazine form in 1834 and then in Twice-Told Tales (1837). Booksellers describe the Berkeley Printers edition as a 1931 printing of 540 copies, 500 for sale.
