This was the fourth novel by Michener who won a Pulitzer Prize (1947) for Tales of the South Pacific. Michener had travelled widely in Asia and this book is the result of him having talked to many people he encountered along the way about their opinions of their country's religious problems, economic questions, and social revolutions.
