Malcolm Lowry. First U.K. edition thus, new and revised edition. London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. Both unclipped dust jacket (in a mylar wrapper) and hardcover are in Very Good+ condition. No writing or markings found in the book, 203 pp.
Malcolm Lowry’s first novel, Ultramarine, originally appeared in 1933 and was based in part on the author’s experiences as a young man aboard a ship bound for the Far East. This 1963 Jonathan Cape edition is the first edition thus, a substantially revised version of the novel incorporating changes Lowry had made to his own copy of the original 1933 edition. It was published posthumously, with an introductory note by Lowry’s widow, Margerie Bonner Lowry.
Ultramarine is an important early work in Lowry’s career and offers a fascinating glimpse of the themes, imagery, and psychological intensity that would later reach full expression in his masterpiece, Under the Volcano.
This is not the first edition of the novel—that distinction belongs to the scarce 1933 Jonathan Cape edition—but rather the first revised edition and first edition thus.
A desirable edition for collectors of Malcolm Lowry, modern British literature, and the author of Under the Volcano.
