Frank Herbert. First edition, BCE. Philadelphia: Chilton Book Company, 1965. Both unclipped dust jacket and hardcover are in Near Fine condition. No writing or markings in this well preserved book club edition, 507 pp. Has some chipping on top of spine.

A very nice copy. The first novel to win both the HUGO and NEBULA awards. An incredible achievement of the imagination. In its original dust jacket with wraparound illustration by John Schoenherr, and map of Dune on rear panel. This is a BCE of the 1st edition by Chilton Book Company from 1965. There were nine such printings of that 1st edition, prior to this edition.

Dune is set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which various noble houses control planetary fiefs. The story focuses on Paul Atreides, who comes to the desert planet Arrakis, or Dune, at a young age and rises to become an all-powerful and messianic figure. Incredibly ambitious in its scope, the novel deals with environmentalism, religion, eugenics, politics, and philosophy. Frank Herbert began researching and writing the novel after being inspired by the sweeping sand dunes near Florence, Oregon. He wrote two separate serials in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, which were later combined and published together as Dune.
