May Sarton (1912-1995) was a Belgian-American poet & author. Awarded National Book Awards in both poetry and fiction. She published more than 40 books.

In 1973, the author moved from New Hampshire to the coast of York, Maine. It was a place where she was alone in all but a few months in the summer, with the sea and the woods, and a wide sky. She discovered that what she had to give didn't depend on others. This book is her journal of that time. The creative passion she thought lost in New Hampshire returned.
