Singer won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. The Estate is the sequel to The Manor (1967). From a 1969 New York Times book review (Jonas), "the central events are illnesses, partings, betrayals of one sort of another and death. Despite the downward curve of the trajectory, the second volume is just as exhilarating to read as the first. Even in their manner of dying, Singer's characters seems to be literally swept away by storms of passion."
