Farrell's novel is about Bernard Clare, a lonely, unassuming man who is ostracized by the other residents of his small town. When he is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he befriends the town's eccentric old man, who helps Bernard find peace in his final days.

James T. Farrell was considered by many as one of the "greatest living novelist" upon publication of this book. In 1973, Farrell was awarded the St. Louis Literary Award from the Saint Louis University Library Associates. In 2012, he was inducted into the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame. He passed away in August, 1979.
