Weintraub's biography looks at the short, tragic life of a genius, Aubrey Beardsley who died at age 26. His art and writing career was brief, a mere five years. His rise to fame and notoriety was meteoric. One prominent American newspaper, though, shortly after his death in 1898, declared: "His influence was only a passing one. Already his work is well-nigh forgotten." Almost 70 years later that same newspaper carried a glowing review of his work.
