Ernest Hemingway. First edition. Dust Jacket: Very Good. The jacket has the original price $2.75 on inside flap. Has a mylar protected wrapper. The rear jacket does have the photographer's credit below the photo (Arnold - Sun Valley) which means it's a second state jacket. The jacket has some chipping as well as a small missing piece on the spine. Hardcover: Very Good. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. Octavo. Inside front/rear cover has some foxing and soiling. There are also two ex-Libri stickers on inside cover.

FWTBT was one of Hemingway's biggest literary triumphs. Were it not for the war and politics of the time, this novel would have been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1941 - as the jurors voted unanimously in favor of the award.

Written in 1939 and finished in 1940, the first edition was published in October of that year, with a print run of 75,000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its war. He returned to critical acclaim with this intense novel of the Spanish Civil War. Basis for the 1943 classic Technicolor film directed by Sam Wood and starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman.
