The book tells the story of Paul Baumer, who enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I.

Considered one of the best war stories written from the German perspective. The book was translated into 26 languages in 1929. "The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. He is a craftsman of unquestionably first rank, a man who can bend language to his will. Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure" (The New York Times Book Review).

It was the basis for the 1930 film directed by Lewis Milestone, with the screenplay by Maxwell Anderson, George Abbott, Del Andrews, C. Gardner Sullivan. This and the 2022 film both won Oscars.
