The Red and the Black is a historical psychological novel. It chronicles the attempts of a provincial young man to rise socially beyond his modest upbringing through a combination of talent, hard work, deception, and hypocrisy. He ultimately allows his passions to betray him.

Stendhal's novel was first published in 1923 and then in 1927 by Boni and Liveright. There was a Limited Edition published prior to this edition which included a run of 1500 signed copies by Hamilton Basso.
