Rabbit Redux is about a former basketball star, now 36, who finds his life is at a crossroads. A fear that he also sees reflected in the economic decline of his hometown in Brewer, Pennsylvania.

Time magazine said of the book and its author, "Updike owns a rare verbal genius, a gifted intelligence and a sense of tragedy made bearable by wit." A writer from the New York Times called it "a masterpiece" upon publication. In 2015, The Guardian ranked it number 88 in a list of the 100 Best Novels.
