Lawrence Durrell. First U.K edition, first printing. London: Faber & Faber, 1978. Unclipped dust jacket (in a mylar weapper) is in Very Good+ condition with minor chipping on top of spine. Jacket design by David Gentleman. Hardcover is clean, sturdy with no writing, 265 pp.

A stunning first impression of the second volume in Durrell’s Avignon Quintet. Bound in green cloth with gilt spine lettering, this copy comes with the original pictorial dust jacket by David Gentleman, priced at £4.95 on the flap. The jacket is unclipped and protected in a mylar sleeve.

Condition: Near Fine. The boards are clean and bright; the text block is tight, and the pages are pristine. The dust jacket shows only very light wear at the edges, no major chips or tears, and minimal fading to the spine.

Why It’s Special:

  • A cornerstone work in Durrell’s Avignon Quintet, a highly regarded metafictional series.
  • The unclipped dust jacket with original price makes this much more desirable to collectors.
  • The 1978 first UK edition is not especially common in fine condition.

Perfect For: Literary collectors, fans of modern British fiction, Durrell completists, and anyone building a curated first-edition shelf.
