Account of United States Antarctic Expedition, leader R.E. Byrd, 1928-30. Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888-1957) was an American naval officer and pioneering polar explorer known for his expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, where he undertook daring flights over both poles. Byrd's first major expedition was in 1926, when he and pilot Floyd Bennett claimed to have flown over the North Pole. This claim was later disputed, but Byrd's reputation as a polar explorer was established.

In 1929, he led an expedition to the South Pole, becoming one of the first people to fly over it. Byrd's explorations were not just about setting records. He and his teams conducted extensive scientific observations, contributing to our understanding of these remote and desolate locations.
