The scarce second novel (3rd book) by the author of The Sheltering Sky. One of 15,000 copies released in the U.S. following the UK edition.

Bowles's dark story follows an American named Nelson Dyar as he arrives in the International Zone of Tangier, Morocco, to begin a new job and a new life. The tale explores the disintegration of the American through his exploration of the brothels, drugs and unsavoury characters of the city, in his encounters with a culture alien to him.
