David Herbert (1885-1930) Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover was first published privately in Italy in 1928, followed by a private French edition in 1929. Due to its explicit content, the novel was banned in several countries, including the U.K. and the U.S., until legal battles in the 1950's and 1960's allowed its wider publication.
This edition is the first unexpurgated American edition published by Grove Press (Greenwich Village, NY), which was significant because it marked a turning point in the U.S. regarding censorship and free speech. Part of the 100 Greatest Books Ever Written collection.
