Publication date of Cowley's original work, with a slightly different tilte, was published in 1934 and this is his revised book which was released in June 1951.
The book is about the literary generation of the 1920's, and it immediately attracted hostile attention from critics who thought that the activities of writers who had abandoned America to pursue their dreams and write their books abroad were irrelevant. Only 800 copies were sold in the first year.
Personaly, this is one of my favorite books about the Lost Generation not to mention the beautiful dust jacket. Which has head shots of some of the greatest living writers of that time. A veritable who's who in literary circles including Joyce, Hemingway, Dos Passos, Fitzgerald, Pound, Cummings and Eliot among others.
