This was Paton's second novel on South Africa. Set in the 1950's, the time of the Passive Resistance campaign, the Sophiatown removals, the emergence of the South African Liberal Party and the early stages of the Nationalist government in power.
The author was a founder of the Liberal Party in South Africa. This covers the years from 1952-1958 and includes both real and fictitious characters who were involved in the fight against apartheid.
