Ernest Hemingway Books into Movies - Burning Tree Books

Ernest Hemingway Books into Movies

We recently watched Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees. My wife and I both enjoyed it. The movie was well done and starred Liev Schreiber and Italian actress Matilda De Angelis (who is a now a new favorite). This got me thinking about all the other great Ernest Hemingway books that have been turned into movies as well.

Here is a list of Ernest Hemingway’s novels and stories that have been adapted into films, along with their release years:

  1. A Farewell to Arms

    • 1932: Starring Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes
    • 1957: Starring Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones
  2. For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940 novel)

    • 1943: Starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman
  3. The Killers (short story from Men Without Women, 1927)

    • 1946: Film noir adaptation starring Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner
    • 1964: Remake starring Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, and Ronald Reagan
  4. To Have and Have Not (1937 novel)

    • 1944: Loosely based on the novel, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
  5. The Old Man and the Sea (1952 novel)

    • 1958: Starring Spencer Tracy
    • 1990: Animated TV movie, narrated by Anthony Quinn
  6. Islands in the Stream (1970 novel, posthumously published)

    • 1977: Starring George C. Scott
  7. Across the River and into the Trees (1950 novel)

    • 2022: Starring Liev Schreiber and Matilda De Angelis
  8. The Sun Also Rises (1926 novel)

    • 1957: Starring Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, and Errol Flynn

Each film varies in its fidelity to Hemingway’s works, often reflecting the era’s cinematic style and sensibilities.
